What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that is characterized by the presence of symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, emotional disturbances, and more. People with schizophrenia can spend a long time without realizing that there is any kind of problem. They may really believe the paranoid delusions that are occurring. They might think that aliens are truly enlisting the human military forces to harass them daily. That’s the way these things work. Self-awareness can be low and it might take an outside person intervening to tell them the truth and even then the person may not believe them.
It can all be very confusing for the person developing schizophrenia because it usually doesn’t occur in a flash. There are such a thing as psychotic breaks, but mostly the onset of schizophrenia is slow enough that nobody see’s it coming. Not even the sufferer, his or her family and friends, or even doctors my notice it at first until the symptoms have gotten very strange. This often involves a strangeness in beliefs. It will revolve around very high topics such as spirituality, mythology, philosophy, and conspiracy.
Fortunately, half of all schizophrenics will get better. They will either fully recover or they will have a decrease in symptoms to the point where they can ignore them or they don’t get in the way of living a regular lifestyle. The rest can do well with continued therapy and assisted living. That’s a good thing and we should all be very happy about that for them. It’s a decent outcome for such a difficult disease and hopefully as time goes on our medical help will get better and better.
